Listened to probably way too much Bat for Lashes during the winter. Something about her voice just calms and saddens me at the same time. It sounds unprofessional to say that this was a brainless project that I just wanted to do, for the sake of making something pretty... but that's what it was. Working on teaching myself Cinema 4D... It's pretty fun actually. I was doing some tutorials and somehow ended up creating a shape that turned into a tree, and then gradually just turned into a mini animation. I did the tree and landscape in Cinema 4D and then moved over to After Effects, to put in the animated text and a particle world.

Geisterphotografie

Done for my photography class, we had to do something based around geisterphotografie (or ghost/spirit photography). I did a narrative about a girl who meets a ghost in her flat, and they go through something of a short (if not violent relationship), and it ends with her being possessed by the ghost. As it takes place at night, you can't be sure if this all happened in her subconscious.
I worked with multiple exposures, and combined with light painting, it took alot of experimenting to get the right effect. However, due to the nature of the photography, I had to shoot at a higher ISO, so the the quality suffered a bit.

I took a video course during Winter semester of my Bauhaus days. It was a free art credit, and the theme we were given was 'Mumbo Jumbo'.
The first one is about what can go wrong when you buy furniture, the second, doesn't have THAT much to do with the theme, but it was more about me trying out stop motion than anything else. Thanks to the lovely Chris for his help with the technical side of things, Anna for her stellar acting, and Martin for his craazy piano skills.

Bibliophile!

So here's my book that I completed for the bibliophile fach course (in which we learned bookmaking techniques). It's a guide for potential Bauhaus students. The first half of the book is geared towards people looking at coming for exchange, and the second half is for both exchange and full-time students. It covers almost everything, from where to get your mail, to integrating within student life in weimar. Yaaay.

These are the illustrations I came up with during semester 1 (in the Illustration Projekt). The first six are the main thing we were working on (we had a series of stories to choose from, and mine is about an unfriendly giant who likes to eat people :) and the other three are smaller assignments (the first, a horoscope for a womens' magazine, the second for Suddeutsche magazine and the third for Mobil magazine).

Merry Christmas

This is a cd case I made for my loved ones for Christmas, each with a different mix for each person. I used a template from my package design book, modified it a bit, and then used scans of photocopies to create a rough layout, and then used pen and ink over top for the rest of the design. I scanned the whole thing again, fixed up some lines and contrast, etc. I wanted to print it on a brown boxboard, but unfortunately that wasn't possible at the time that I did it. I would have liked to send out more, so sorry if I didn't get one to you! I'm now working on making a t-shirt design in this style, that I will later silkscreen.

Screenprinting Part III

The top one I made for B-rice's birthday... The photo makes it look spotty for some reason (?) The second one was from a drawing that I did, then made into a print, for Mike's birthday. The third one is a shirt I made for Jordan, using a Rob Frost original drawing, and the last one is actually the first one I made this summer, for my older brother's birthday (modeled by Miles). I also drew right onto acetate which left no room for error...

I also reprinted some others for my Oma, but this is the first one I've done on my larger screen (which is turning out to be a bigger pain in the ass than I anticipated, especially when trying to rinse it in the bathtub...) We reprinted Bryce's and rinsed off the screen with a hose in the backyard, and that was ten times easier! Hopefully I'll figure out a better system for cleaning at home.

Typography 3 Project 2

For this project, we had to research the founding Futurist manifesto and look at other manifestos as well. We then chose one and created a layout that integrated the two, with legibility being of less importance. Getting little to no hints on what we were doing (just told us to do whatever we wanted, while having a hidden agenda...?), honestly, the most frustrating project I've ever done, but it turned out farily well in the end. Some other people used folds to put theirs together, but I opted to make a book, using the drillpress at York, which was pretty cool.

Typography 3 Project 1

This project was carried out over the whole semester and involved us choosing from a list of songs and then doing three different approaches to the lyrics. The song I did was "I Need to Wake Up" by Melissa Etheridge. I could describe the process behind this project, but it's a complicated one (and I also forget, and don't care anymore). We then had to create a chemise (package) for the layouts. I made two different ones, one out of paper and cardboard backing, the other out of wood for the exterior and a fabric chemise. It's hard to see, but there are three different types of paper. The second and third are the same colour, but the third is a coloured mylar...

So I made alot of shirts over the holidays... oddly enough there seemed to be a couple more screwups than last time. I asked my family what they wanted, and then made prints based on that. I drew for two of them (the flower and the abstract explosion type thing, and also made some stencils for a few of the shirts) and the others were live traces. Most of them were made as Christmas presents, and I made one for myself. The flower was for my oma, the mooninites for my older brother, the abstract was for my mum, the snowboard for my little brother and the motorcyle was for my dad. I'm also really happy with how my unicorn sweater turned out. It took 6 screens to make! I'm going to probably make one more shirt, and then move onto printing on paper... exciting!

So these are all a part of the last project regarding sweatshops, and this one is based on a mailer created for the elderly ("mature") crowd, using ethos. The idea is to get them to fill out the form and donate money, so I designed envelopes to go with the brochure as well (one to send to the person, the other to send the form back in). I made the images by scanning fabric and sewing supplies. I also scanned several images and then had them developed so make them look like actual photographs. The top one is the inside, the following is the back. The brochure folds three times and has 4 panels.

So these are part of a project I did in Comm Des, where we chose a major issue and then basically worked with that issue throughout the semester (it was like an editorial type class). This project had three components within it, all based on a Now magazine insert, using the power of pathos. The first one was based simply on type (that one doesn't originally have the black outline, I just had to put it in so the top/bottom didn't fade into nothingness on screen), the second predominately images and the third was a combination of type and image.

This is a handlettering project I did for type, in which we chose a small event and then had to create a mark and put it onto a little flyer type handout. Mine was Fiesta Week in Oshawa. I did the lettering, scanned it, fixed up the edges and whatnot and created the background using photoshop.

So I started experimenting with my silkscreen this summer, and this is what I've come up with so far...
The one at the top was my first try at photo emulsion, the second was for my mum, the third was a drawing I did (the other three were images I altered in photoshop and then live traced) and the fourth was a shirt I made for Michelle's birthday. I also made two other shirts for Mike and Peter, but I won't post those because they're too ridiculous.

Design & Image - Project 3

This was done in India ink and then scanned and colourized in pantone. It is a poster done to illustrate the Aesop's fable 'The dancing monkeys' but I put it into a modern context. The idea is that rather being monkeys dressed as courtiers, today's monkeys are actually people dressed in suits who go off to work each day.

For this project we had to go out into an area and photograph it in the context of a particular word. From the list, I chose iconoclastic (others did fragmented, quixotic, circulatory, etc.) I went to the alleys between Richmond and Queen off of Spadina and photographed the graffiti. We then also had to incorporate text, so I chose "White Riot" by the Clash because I thought it seemed appropriate. I wanted to print out the back images and then scan the lyrics on lined paper (taped down with masking tape) on top, but I ran out of time.

This was done for Design & Image and the goal was to create a package for a personal item of ours and the exterior should allude to what is inside. I did my headphones, so first did some analog (as well as realistic) drawings and also researched how headphones are made and the science of electricity (my teacher loves crazy process work :p) and then scanned in some of my drawings and experimented with brushes and lines. The icon seen on the top and bottom were made by tracing a realistic drawing and then live painting it. We also had to find templates and modify them as our own to create the package.

We learned about using pantone colour for this project, and we had to create six tickets, (three in solid uncoated - the three at the top, and three in solid coated - the three bottom) for three bands of different genres. Some of the images were live traces of other photos, and for a couple of them I used my tablet. I also scanned some lace and then live traced it for the grey Portishead ticket. Not a terribly successful project, but it's alright.

For this project we had to create an ad campaign for a paint company that had bought out either a sports/hardware or fashion/cosmetics company. I chose the latter and did body painting as my theme. We had to do web, computer and print campaigns (for the print one, I made little folding brochures, each with three panels) and for each campaign and six different colour schemes for each campaign (triadic, analogous, warm dominance, cool dominance, monochromatic and complementary, as in the previous colour project). These are just a few examples of some of the layouts. There are tons of other photographs and 12 other layouts that were all created over the course of 2 months and were then handed in as a package.

Design and Colour - Project 1

For this one, we had to make coasters for the "Sense" design show using six different colour schemes (triadic, monochromatic, cool dominance, analogous, warm dominance and complementary).
I did mine based on abstract illustrations of scientific ideas, and these were done in Illustrator and I used my tablet. I would like to use it more often, this was sort of an experiment.

Type I - Project 2

This is project 2 from Typography I of first semester. We had to research an ancient form of writing and then create a mark based on that form. I did Native American pictograms. We then had to photograph it and incorporate it into a book layout. The final is mouned on a board, and I used foamcore to make a fake book shape (I'm just too lazy to photograph it at the moment). And yes, I did use Zapfino... it was first year, and I was young and naive.

For this project we were given random dollar store objects and had to photograph them in unique and abstract ways, without knowing why. After the pictures were taken, we then found out that we would have to create a poster for a play using those photos. My objects were several toy dogs, and I chose Macbeth as my play.

This is also from Typography I and for this assignment, we had to choose an obscure word that other people may not know the meaning of, and then depict it in a way that illustrated the meaning.
I created each one by printing the definition on a transparency and the freezing it in a container. I then photographed the different ice blocks using different angles and lighting techniques. I then tweaked the photos in photoshop to enhance colour and sharpness of the images. I did a lot of photogs, these were the better 2, and I ended up handing in the top one.
